Y GYNGHRAIR has become a limited company by guarantee and is now able to accept applications for membership. It is vital that Welsh composers, publishers and authors become members in order that Y GYNGHRAIR can be a company that can respond effectively to the present situation and any future developments in the Welsh music industry.

Each member is entitled to one vote in the annual General Meeting.

There is no joining fee. The only commitment is £1 payable if the company is wound-up.

PRS have cut the royalty rate for Radio Cymru from 80p to 47p a minute. Along with the loss of the analogy payments, this meant that we were facing a reduction of about 95% in our PRS income.

Y Gynghrair has succeeded in getting PRS to gradually phase in the cuts over 3 years. Also, following sustained pressure by Y Gynghrair, PRS has conducted a survey in to the use of Welsh language material at venues like pubs, clubs, shops, theatres etc. As a result, we will now receive approximately 25% of the previous analogy levels. This means that we have clawed back approximately £270,000 a year for composers and publishers.

Y Gynghrair is considering various responses to safeguard the industry's future, including the commissioning of a feasibility study to look at creating an independent licensing and collecting body in Wales. The results of the study should be available in early 2009.
